Native Hawaiian Sandalwood Reforestation
We have been working with a plot of around 200 sandalwood trees in Honokaa that w
ere said to be the best germ plasm repository of sandalwood in the Hawaiian islands by several experts. These trees are overrun with weeds so we have been weeding and mulching them with green waste to foster growth and keep weeds at bay.
In the long term, we aim to plant mamaki with the sandalwood trees to prevent the weeds from spreading in the future. We would also like to construct a visitors's center and serve the mamaki tea fresh. The plot of land is easily accessible by vehicle and tourist buses often drive in and out. We would also like to see the land so healthy and vibrant that new sandalwood trees are able to sprout, take root, and grow!
